Most kids would jump for joy at having a weekend away from their parents, able to sneakily nab more sweets, extend your bedtime by a couple of hours and watch TV until your eyes turn square.

But for one 10-year-old from #Michigan, the homesickness became so strong that he seemingly went to great lengths to see his mother.

Around 1:40pm on May 27th, Michigan State Police troopers received a call from OnStar – an in-vehicle security service and subsidiary of General Motors. A 2017 Buick Encore was reported by the service as having been stolen and travelling on southbound l-75 at high speeds, police said.

Multiple 911 phone calls also came in, with reports of a child having been spotted behind the wheel of a car, driving along the same road. A brief police chase commenced, with dash cam footage showing the 2017 Buick Encore swerving over multiple lanes with its back lights blinking.

With the help of the OnStar in-vehicle system, the car was remotely disabled and slowly came to a standstill, colliding slightly with a rail on the side of the freeway. The dash cam footage shows the driver door of the car opening and, according to police, the 10-year-old attempted to run from the scene, fleeing into the woods at the side of the road.

The young child – who is thought to have been living with relatives at the time of the incident – was quickly caught by police and reportedly told them that he had stolen the SUV to try visit his mother in Detroit.

Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident. It has not yet been confirmed if the 10-year-old will face any criminal charges, however, he was taken to Saginaw County Juvenile Center shortly after being apprehended by police, as per The Detroit News.
