DL Music IP LP Acquires John Legend’s Music Catalog

Grammy Award-winning artist John Legend has sold his whole music catalog after reportedly being offered a deal in Sept. 2021.

DL Music IP LP, an associate of San Francisco-based KKR Credit Advisors, and BMG Rights Management each obtained a 50% stake in the catalog, according to a report from Bloomberg.

While the monetary details of the contract have not been publicly revealed, it has been verified that the singer-songwriter sold the copyrights to his music works from John Legend Music Inc. and his rights to collect royalty checks from any songs he wrote from Dec. 1, 2004, to Jan. 1, 2021.

BMG and KKR will join forces to source individual transactions to acquire music catalogs, bringing together BMG’s deep industry knowledge and global capabilities in maximizing value for its artists with KKR’s vast network, resources and deep experience as an investor in market-leading music, digital, media and content businesses,” the official announcement reads.

John Legend is a singer, songwriter, and producer. Prior to the release of Legend’s debut album Get Lifted (2004), he collaborated with already-established artists and signed to Kanye West’s GOOD Music.

Legend has sung on Jay-Z’s “Encore”, Alicia Keys’s “You Don’t Know My Name”, Dilated Peoples’ “This Way”, Slum Village’s “Selfish”, Fort Minor’s “High Road”, and played piano on Lauryn Hill’s “Everything Is Everything”.

Legend’s single “All of Me” from his fourth studio album Love in the Future (2013) was a Billboard Hot 100 number-one hit.
