New Study Claims Alcohol Can Improve Foreign Language Skills

A study published recently in the Journal of Psychopharmacology claims that alcohol can improve foreign language skills.

To prove their hypothesis, researchers from three universities—University of Liverpool, Maastricht University, and King’s College London brought together a group of 50 German-speaking subjects who had recently learnt to speak Dutch.

Some members of this group were then given a low dose of alcohol while others got a beverage that contained no alcohol, and were asked to have a conversation in Dutch for a few minutes.

The recorded conversations were judged by two native Dutch speakers unaware of which participants were given alcohol. The subjects who were slightly intoxicated received better ratings particularly for pronunciation, than their sober colleagues.

No wonder you feel more confident about your French after a few flutes of Champagne.
