Brittney Griner Is Expected To Be Swapped With Russian Arms Dealer Viktor Blount For Her Freedom

There seems to be hope for Brittney Griner and her freedom. According to exclusive reports by the Daily Mail, President Biden is in heavy negotiations with the Russian government to complete the swap for Griner and another U.S. prisoner for a Russian arms dealer.

The deal was proposed before Griner’s sentencing, but they couldn’t come to an agreement before. Now with her being sentenced to 9 years, the pressure is on Biden to get her home.

The Daily Mail reports that a source close to the negotiations claims that the swap could take place within the next month. This deal has been circulating for weeks with Biden proposing the freedom of Griner and Paul Whelan, another citizen being held prisoner, in exchange for “Merchant of Death” arms dealer, Viktor Blount.

The Russians didn’t agree to the deal because they wanted to complete the sentencing due to the need for judicial process. The deal to swap Griner with Bout is planning to happen now more likely than ever. It is reportedly could be completed within a month if there are no delays to the process.

“The US position has weakened now. They showed their hand and now their bargaining position has weakened,”the source said.

Griner’s attorneys have ten days to file an appeal for her sentencing. After that, the matter would only take a few more weeks, but the Russians may not be as quick to agree to it as Biden hopes. According to the source, Whelan may or may not be included in the deal now that Griner has been sentenced.

“The Russians might think Whelan is too much now… after today, his place in the deal is not so certain,” the source said.
