Sen. Ted Cruz Believes The Supreme Court Was Wrong For Legalizing Gay Marriage

Sen. Ted Cruz says he believes that the Supreme Court didn’t make the right decision when they legalized gay marriage.

During the recent episode of his podcast, Verdict With Ted Cruz, Cruz says he thinks Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark case that legalized same-sex marriage, should be overturned. He says they made the wrong decision at the time.

“Obergefell, like Roe v. Wade, ignored two centuries of our nation’s history,” Cruz said.

“Marriage was always an issue that was left to the states. We saw states before Obergefell. Some states were moving to allow gay marriage, other states were moving to allow civil partnerships. There were different standards that the states were adopting.”

Cruz believes that it should be left up to the states to determine whether it should be legalized or not. It seems like if it was up to him, he would abolish everything.

In 2016, Cruz ran for president of the United States, placing second behind Donald Trump in the Republican primaries. The competition for the Republican presidential nomination between Trump and Cruz was deeply acrimonious and characterized by a series of public personal attacks.

While Cruz initially declined to endorse Trump’s campaign once he won the nomination, he became a staunch Trump supporter during his presidency. After the January 2021 Capitol attack, Cruz received widespread political and popular backlash for objecting to the certification of Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election and giving credence to the false claim that the election was stolen from Trump.
