R. Kelly’s Attorney Says Racketeering Charge Was Inappropriate, Plans To Appeal
R. Kelly’s Attorney Plans To Appeal The 30-Years Sentence
We reported earlier that R. Kelly has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison following his conviction for 9 federal charges, including sex crimes and human trafficking.
Federal prosecutors had recommended no less than 25 years in prison.
The trial went on for just about over a month, where Kelly’s legal team called on several of ex-Kelly employees and associates all saying, under oath, they never saw Kelly abuse anyone.

Well, R. Kelly’s attorney Jennifer Bonjean says the racketeering charge was inappropriate and plans to appeal the 30 years sentence. “This was not a real Rico or racketeering act violation. These were isolated events that happened many years ago, and the government simply tried to plead around the statute of limitations to bring it in a Rico charge, which was inappropriate,” she said.
“So I mean, all I can tell you is there was no enterprise. There was no enterprise. It was one man with allegations by a number of women, which doesn’t make it an enterprise, and that is why he’s not guilty of of racketeering.”
Prosecutors, brought dozens of witnesses to the stand, countering those claims, some said Kelly had managers, bodyguards and assistants who rounded up his potential victims before the singer groomed them for unwanted sex, among other things.
R. Kelly did not take the stand during this trial. He is still facing another federal case out of Illinois, plus a state trial in Minnesota.
