Dominican Republic Minister Shot Dead In His Office By Childhood Friend

The Dominican Republic’s minister of the environment and natural resources was shot dead inside his office.

In a statement, Mr. Jorge Mera’s family said he had been shot multiple times by a man he was friends with since childhood.

According to the BBC, witnesses said they heard at least seven shots. The gunman, Miguel Cruz, walked into Mera’s office alone and managed to escape afterward, but now has been arrested by authorities.

“Our family forgives the person who did this. One of Orlando’s greatest legacies was to not hold grudges,” his family added.

In a tweet, President Abinader expressed his sincere condolences to Mr. Jorge Mera’s family saying, “I deeply regret the death of my good friend, our minister, Orlando Jorge Mera.”

He continued, “My most sincere condolences to his wife Patricia and his children Orlando and Patricia Victoria. Rest in peace, dear friend.”
