Russian State TV Releases A Photo Of WNBA Star Brittney Griner, Who Was Arrested On Drug Charges

Russian state TV has released a photo of WNBA star Brittney Griner, who was arrested on drug charges sometime last month. The painful photo that has been released to the public shows the basketball player holding up a sign with her name on it.

The arrest of the two-time Olympic gold medalist has left family members, friends, and fans with little information about her well-being and anxious for her safe return.

Griner’s wife, Cherelle, wrote on Instagram on Monday, “My heart, our hearts, are all skipping beats every day that goes by without hearing from you. I miss your voice. I miss your presence. You’re our person! There are no words to express this pain. I’m hurting, we’re hurting. We await the day to love on you as a family,” she wrote.

As we previously reported, on Saturday, the Russian Federal Customs Service said that its officials had detained an American basketball player after allegedly finding vape cartridges that contained hashish oil in her luggage at the Sheremetyevo airport near Moscow. The Russian news agency TASS, citing a law enforcement source, identified the player as Griner, the seven-time W.N.B.A.

All-Star center for the Phoenix Mercury. Following the breaking news, her team released a statement saying, “We are aware of and are closely monitoring the situation with Brittney Griner in Russia. We remain in constant contact with her family, her representation, the W.N.B.A., and N.B.A. We love and support Brittney and at this time our main concern is her safety, physical and mental health, and her safe return home.”

As of right now, it is still unclear exactly how long Griner has been in custody because Russian authorities have not specified when in February she was arrested.

At the time of her arrest, Griner had just flown from New York to Russia where plays for European basketball powerhouse UMMC Ekaterinburg during the WNBA offseason.
