Man Hospitalized With Mysterious Seizures Was Diagnosed With Tapeworms That Had Been Living In His Brain For Decades

A Massachusetts man who was reportedly in good health for years suddenly suffered from seizures and was hospitalized. During his stay, he learned a tapeworm had lived in his brain for decades.

The 38-year-old patient experienced seizures, disorientation, and talked in “gibberish” after his wife woke up and found him on the floor of their home one night.

Doctors reported in the New England Journal of Medicine that the man did not respond to questions and stared at the ceiling during the evaluation. After further tests, the staff at the Massachusetts General Hospital diagnosed him with a tapeworm infection also known as cysticercosis.

Before moving to the United States 20 years ago, the man lived in a rural area in Guatemala where he most likely contracted the tapeworm.

As reported by Insider, tapeworms can be contracted from eating undercooked food such as meat or fish. After the diagnosis, doctors gave the patient anti-seizure medication and antibiotics.

‘The patient was extubated 12 hours after the presentation and was transferred to the neurology service the following morning. He started treatment with 2 weeks of albendazole and praziquantel, along with 4 weeks of high-dose prednisone, followed by a 4-week tapering course.




He was discharged on hospital day 5, with normal results on a neurologic examination and no further seizure activity.  to treat the infection.’
