Skateboarder  Caught On Video Defacing George Floyd Statue In Union Square

The new statue of George Floyd that is located in Union Square was vandalized with paint not even 48 hours after it was unveiled to the public.

The statue is surrounded by Breonna Taylor and John Lewis. Cops have not located the vandalizer, but they have footage of a male doing the attack early Sunday morning.

On Monday, authorities released video footage of the moment a vandal on a skateboard tosses paint on a George Floyd statue in Union Square. The incident happened at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, with the suspect riding up to the statue, spraying paint from a can, then casually skateboarding away.

The NYPD said they’re searching for the skateboarder, who was described wearing black and green and carrying a green backpack.

The statue is one of three monuments by artist Chris Carnabuci that were unveiled in the park ok Thursday. The “SeeInJustice” art installation is a tribute to Floyd, a Black man, who died on May 25, 2020, after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly 9 minutes.

The art installation also includes statues of Breonna Taylor, who was shot and killed by Louisville police back in March 2020, and Georgia Rep. John Lewis, the prominent civil rights leader who died last year.

Floyd’s brother, Terrence was in attendance for the ceremony on Friday to unveil the statue. The Union Square project is #SeeInJustice and all three statues stand about 6 feet tall, shining in bronze paint.
