Sony/RCA Drops R Kelly But He’s Not Bothered

Following the release of Lifetime’s “Surviving R Kelly” series, fans called for Sony/ RCA to sever ties with the disgraced R&B star.
Yesterday, Variety announced that the label finally bowed to pressure and let R Kelly go.

A source told them that “the company took its time to wade through the issues “responsibly” and avoid legal ramifications.”

R Kelly was also removed from the RCA Records website, although the label will still profit from Kelly’s back catalog. A source close to Kelly told RadarOnline that the label gave Kelly 10 days notice before letting him go.
“Robert was made aware from the label that they had intention[s] of dropping him after the documentary aired,” the source told Radar. “They received a great amount of backlash from not just fans Opens a New Window. , but artists. They were worried that his reputation would taint other artists on the label.”

“He doesn’t care. It appears [that] this was the final straw for him to ‘go after’ the network and people involved in [the documentary] in a civil suit. That’s his main priority,” the source continued. “He will likely open his own ‘label’ from what he told us.”
We don’t know who would willingly sign with the artists as more information about his alleged dealings are surfacing.

Just this Friday a former Epic Records intern, Tracy Sampson, told Dateline NBC that she and R Kelly had a relationship when she was aged just 16.

She claimed that Kelly “forcibly kissed her and then began to “pleasure himself” in her presence but later fell in love with the star. She remained under Kelly’s spell for two years before leaving at 18.

Sampson then sued him for sexual abuse, settling out of court for $250,000.
